Portrait of Adam Lowry and Eric Ryan of method by San Francisco photographer Winni WintermeyerPortrait of Adam Lowry and Eric Ryan of method by San Francisco photographer Winni Wintermeyer

JAN 10 Method men - Adam Lowry and Eric Ryan, creators of non-toxic cleaning products, photographed for CNBC Business magazine out of London. I actually love using their stuff, the almond-flavered wood floor cleaner makes me run out of the house to get a bear claw and hot coffee and inhale it right on the floor. Took them out into the street to get dirty but the clean shots made it into the issue. »

Portrait of Thao Nguyen by San Francisco photographer Winni Wintermeyer

SEP 09 Thao Nguyen photographed for Paper magazine. She was so chill and easy to work with, made this shoot so smooth and easy. Even though there wasn't much time I got a bunch of good material. Here are more shots from the same session. She's on tour right now with her band The Get Down Stay Down - go see her. »

Das Magazin Cover

SEP 09 Got to hit the road for a story about the future coming out of California. From a hippie commune in Boonville to companies exploring new ways of generating energy with wind power. Part documentary, part travel story looking for the spirit of the land. I'll try and post some photos soon, here's the article in DAS MAGAZIN from Switzerland for now. You may wanna visit through Google translate though if you can't read German. »

Hasselblad Masters 1 Hasselblad Masters 2

AUG 09 I'm excited to be part of the prestigious Hasselblad "Masters on Tour" exhibition this year which is traveling around the globe right now. Images from my PreOccupied series were selected for the Fine Art category and one photo of each contestant will be on display. There are 10 Masters categories with 10 portfolios selected for each and a jury will decide the final winners at the end of the year. All final contestants are showcased on their website as well and the public can cast their vote here. Not that I'm asking you to vote for me, but there's some interesting work up on the site which is worth a visit.
The show just finished up in Hong Kong and is currently on display in Copenhagen at Dask Gallery through September 12th. After that it will travel to Milk Studios in New York during PhotoPlus Expo in October and London in December. More info here.

The same series also received an honorable mention at the Prix de la Photographie, Paris (Px3) and the International Photo Awards. IPA selected a portrait of Marlis Tanner as well, which is an outtake of a shoot I did for Swiss publication Das Magazin. It's nice to get some recognition for my work in Europe and I'm excited about a few stories I've been working on for magazines over there. I'll post new material in the news section once it's published.

MAR 09 Fritjof Capra, physicist, author, environmentalist, photographed in Berkeley for Beobachter Natur, a new Swiss publication. »

MAR 09 Loving the work of Chinese photographer Muge Huang Rong. It's like discovering a foreign culture with a familiar visual language that seems contemporary yet timeless. There's an interesting tension in his portraits between what seems documentarian but staged at times. Check out his web site but be patient for images to load. His work is currently up in Bremen, Germany at GIM who also published a catalog. A second edition is in the works for the Frankfurt book fair. He's also showing at the FORMAT photo festival in Derby, England through April 5th.

MAR 09 Went gallery hopping and found some good shows up. Don't miss Trevor Paglen's show at Altman Siegel. It's a perfect blend of photography, conceptual art and investigative journalism dealing with undisclosed military operations and spy satellites. The beautiful large scale photographs show landscapes and abstract skies, shot mostly at night with long exposures focusing on installations and objects the government prefers to hide. Besides being a researcher at UC Berkeley he's written a few books which have been on my wish list for a while but I've never made the connection between the individual titles and the artist until I saw them sitting next to each other at the show. It's interesting stuff ranging from secret military ops to experimental geography. You can dig through his site and find out more and also check out a preview of the show at the gallery's web site. Runs through April 11th - go see it!
The influence of Edward Hopper on photographers is pretty obvious. He definitely gave me some insights before I ever made it to the States. It's nice to see some of his sketches (including notes about color) and paintings intertwined with photographs by Robert Adams, Shore, Friedlander, Eggleston, Walker Evans, Harry Callahan, Diane Arbus and Robert Frank. Shows at Fraenkel Gallery through May 2nd and there's an extensive catalog accompanying the exhibit.

Alaska

SEP 08 Spent only a couple of days in Alaska for Die Weltwoche, a news weekly from Switzerland. Lots of rain, too much time on the road driving but the taxidermy shop turned out to be a gem. Here are a few selects. »

Joyce Hu

Sep 08 Received three honorable mentions at the International Photography Awards in the portrait, fashion and fine-art landscape categories. It's quite a mixed bag what makes it in there, but see for yourself. Though sponsored by Pilsner Urquell - once again - I have not received any beer in exchange for my entry fees. Here are my submissions. »

Gerhard Richter

Gerhard Richter's Lesende, 1994 mit Betrachterin, 2008

SEP 08Taken at the SFMOMA. There's a great story in the Guardian about Richter's paintings. Here's a quote:
"I consider belief of every kind, from astrology to every elevated religion and all great ideologies, to be superfluous and mortally dangerous," Richter has said. "We no longer need such things. We ought to work out different strategies against misery and injustice, war and catastrophes."
Another one out of his book "Portraits" published by Hatje Cantz:
"I don't think the painter need either see or know his sitter. A portrait must not express anything of the sitters 'soul,' essence or character. Nor must a painter 'see' the sitter in any specific, personal way. »

Bart Davenport

AUG 08 Singer-songwriter Bart Davenport for Mini-International magazine. Their San Francisco issue just launched focusing on green issues and a mix of art, culture, tech & food. I shot a bunch for them and it may be hard to find on newsstands here since it's published in Germany but they expanded their web presence and there's more content to be found online. Measure of Time Mailer

AUG 08 New work in Measure of Time, a group show at the Oakland Museum of California at City Center. It'll run through June 2009, so there's plenty of time to see it. Lots of art to view in Oakland these days, just check out their Visual Arts Map before you go. »

Chester Himes GarlicReadymade How To Start A Fire

JUN 08 Busting out the toy cameras. I've been doing a couple shoots with the old Duaflex. One how-to for Readymade on building a campfire. Bringing back childhood memories of near disasters with fields on fire and thinking about doing a follow-up on how to put out wildfires with your denim jacket. The other one for edible SAN FRANCISCO on garlic grower Chester Himes which left me with stinky breath for days but the incredible range of flavors were all worth it.
